Oh man... I have been dreaming about my wedding day, and my dream man, for years.
But this waiting thing. It's hard.
Now, I am all about women being strong, independent, and able to live and do things on their own. I love to do all those things for myself, and love my alone time. However, why can't women be strong and independent while being with someone else? What's so bad about wanting to be married? Why is it wrong to want to find a companion you can love and spend the eternities with?
I think love is beautiful. Every part of it - from your first crush in Kindergarten, to the excitement at the beginning of a relationship, to the fights and makeups of a newly married couple, and to the deep respect an elderly couple has for each other after they've gone through so many hardships and happy times in life. Life is so much better when you have someone to go on all your crazy adventures with you. I always think about the couple Carl and Ellie from the Pixar movie "Up." They are the sweetest and portray so many aspects of life and love from childhood to old age. I apsire to be like Carl and Ellie someday.
Another animated movie that has an adorable love story is Disney's "Tangled." Can I just say that I love Flynn Rider? Flynn and Rapunzel's dynamic as a couple is something that I want to have someday, and not just because they live happily ever after. At the beginning of the movie, Flynn and Rapunzel each have very different dreams about life and the directions they want their lives to go, and they plan on reaching their dreams in very different ways. As the movie progresses, they learn to work together to accomplish their dreams, and slowly, their dreams become more about each other. They still reached their original goals, but they did it together.
That's who your future husband/wife will be - someone who will be by your side who will be supporting you and helping you achieve your goals throughout your lives, and you will do the same for him/her. Just like Rapunzel and Flynn Rider changed throughout the movie, as you and your spouse continue through life, you will help each other change and become better, more Christlike people. Flynn Rider became Eugene Fitzherbert, who represents the kinder, sweeter, more loving and caring side of him. Flynn could change and still achieve his dreams, and so can you (and your spouse). You each become each others' dream.
"You were my new dream."
- Eugene Fitzherbert (Flynn Rider)
Marriage is hard work. I know that and I haven't even been married yet. Most little girls have such big dreams for their wedding day and have been planning it their whole lives... But what comes after the wedding celebration more important... The rest of eternity.
One important thing to remember about marriage is that when you love Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and put them first in all aspects of your life, you will actually grow closer to your spouse. Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints said:
“The Lord Jesus Christ is the focal point in a covenant marriage relationship. … [Imagine that] the Savior is positioned at the apex of [a] triangle, with a woman at the base of one corner and a man at the base of the other corner. Now consider what happens in the relationship between the man and the woman as they individually and steadily ‘come unto Christ’ and strive to be ‘perfected in Him’ (Moroni 10:32). Because of and through the Redeemer, the man and the woman come closer together.”
Are you getting excited?
Because I am.
“Marriage is more than your love for each other. … In your love you see only your two selves in the world, but in marriage you are a link in the chain of the generations, which God causes to come and to pass away to his glory, and calls into his kingdom. In your love you see only the heaven of your own happiness, but in marriage you are placed at a post of responsibility towards the world and mankind. Your love is your own private possession, but marriage is more than something personal—it is a status, an office. Just as it is the crown, and not merely the will to rule, that makes the king, so it is marriage, and not merely your love for each other, that joins you together in the sight of God and man. … So love comes from you, but marriage from above, from God.” (Elder D. Todd Christofferson, April 2015 LDS General Conference, “Why Marriage, Why Family").
Don't worry. You'll find your Flynn Rider or Rapunzel, or Carl or Ellie someday! If not in this life, you'll find them in the next. God has a plan for you and for them. Trust Him.
I know that Heavenly Father wants His children to be happy here on Earth and in Heaven. I know that God loves you and is looking out for you. Remember that you are a beloved child of your Heavenly Father who is always listening to you. Turn to Him first when you need help, have a question, or just want to talk. He will always be there for you.
